Learner licence 1

What are the prerequisites?

How do I book the test?

You don’t need to book ahead to get your Phase 1 learner permit, just visit any Licensing Centre.

What do I bring to the test?

  • Evidence of identity and residence
  • Means to pay for the test and licence fee

I’ve completed the requirements, now how do I get my Phase 1 learner permit?

Your Phase 1 learner permit will be issued to you on the spot when you successfully complete the required tests and pay the licence fee.

What does having a Phase 1 learner permit mean?

  • You are now permitted to drive a car under supervision. Your supervisor must be someone who has held a full Australian driving licence for at least four years
  • You must adhere to the special rules for Phase 1 learner drivers

What are the special rules for Phase 1 learner drivers

  • Must clearly display L plates on front and rear of vehicle
  • Must always be supervised by person who has held a full Australian driving licence for a minimum of four years
  • Must not exceed a blood alcohol level of 0.0%
  • Must not exceed 100km/h
  • Cannot drive within Kings Park

What happens next?

After you’ve held your learner’s permit for six months, you are eligible to undergo the Practical Driving Assessment.. If you pass, you’ll progress to Phase II of your learner’s permit.

Learner licence 2

What are the prerequisites?

  • Minimum Age: 16 years and six months
  • Must have held a Phase 1 learner permit for at least six months

What test/s do I have to take?

Practical Driving Assessment (PDA)

What’s on the test?

An assessor will evaluate your driving skills over a set course.

How do I book and pay for the test?

  • By phone on 13 11 56 (pay by credit card)
  • In person at any Licensing Centre (pay by credit card, eftpos, cash or cheque)

Where do I take the test?

At any Licensing Centre.

What do I bring to the test?

  • A clean, registered, roadworthy vehicle with L plates
  • Evidence of identity and residence
  • Means to pay for the test
  • Your Phase 1 learner permit

I’ve completed the requirements, now how do I get my Phase 2 learner permit?

Your Phase 2 learner permit will be issued to you on the spot when you successfully complete the required test.

What does having a Phase 2 learner permit mean?

  • You must still display L plates and be supervised while driving a car. Your supervisor must be someone who has held a full Australian driving licence for at least four years
  • You must adhere to the special rules for Phase 2 learner drivers

What are the special rules for Phase 2 learner drivers

  • Must clearly display L plates on front and rear of vehicle
  • Must always be supervised by person who has held a full Australian driving licence for a minimum of four years
  • Must not exceed a blood alcohol level of 0.0%
  • Must not exceed 100km/h
  • Cannot drive within Kings Park

What happens next?

Before you are eligible to apply for your P1 licence, you must hold your Phase 2 learner permit for a further six months. During this period, you are required to accumulate at least 25 hours of supervised driving experience, which must be recorded in your logbook (which is given to you when you pass the PDA).

Provisional licence 1 (P1)

What are the prerequisites?

  • Minimum Age: 17
  • Must have held a Phase 2 learner permit for at least six months
  • Must have accumulated at least 25 hours of supervised driving practice, which must be recorded in the logbook that was supplied to you when you passed the Practical Driving Assessment

What test/s do I have to take?

The Hazard Perception Test (HPT)

What’s on the test?

The HPT is a computer-based test that simulates a series of moving traffic scenes and tests your response to dangerous situations.

What study materials do I need?

You don’t need a handbook for the HPT, but you can practice your skills online.

  • Your Phase 2 learner permit

I’ve completed the requirements, now how do I get my P1 licence?

Your P1 licence will be issued to you on the spot when you successfully complete the required test and pay the licence fee.

What does having a P1 licence mean?

  • You are now permitted to drive a car without supervision
  • You must adhere to the special rules for Phase I provisional drivers

What are the special rules for P1 drivers?

  • Must display red P plates at all times when driving
  • Must not exceed a blood alcohol level of 0.0%
  • Cannot drive between 12am and 5am

What happens next?

After six months on your P1 licence, you are eligible to progress to your P2 licence.

Provisional Licence 2 (P2)

What are the prerequisites?

  • Minimum Age: 17 years and six months
  • Must have held a P1 licence for at least six months

What does having a P2 licence mean?

  • You are now permitted to drive a car between 12am and 5am
  • You must adhere to the special rules for P2 drivers

What are the special rules for P2 licence drivers

  • Must clearly display green P plates on front and rear of vehicle
  • Must not exceed a blood alcohol level of 0.0%

What happens next?

Once you have held your P2 licence for one year and six months, you will progress to your full licence.

Full licence

What are the prerequisites?

  • Minimum Age: 19
  • Must have held a P2 licence for at least one year and six months

What does having a full licence mean?

Now that you are a little more experienced, you no longer have to adhere to the special rules that apply to provisional drivers, but you do need to abide by the rules and restrictions that apply to all WA drivers.
